Image

This blog post summarizes my conversation with Mr. Sandor Szabo (who manages the IBM Informix Development team in Munich) about the role of IBM Informix 12.10.UC2 in ARM processors

In conversation with Sandor Szabo, manager of the IBM Informix Development team in Munich.

Can you please explain more about ARM Processor and the role of Informix?

ARM Processors have reduced costs, heat and power usage compared to more complex chip designs, traits which makes it desirable for light, portable, battery-powered devices like smartphones, laptops, tablet, and notepad computers  and other embedded systems. Alternatively the use of a simpler design allows more efficient multi-core CPUs and higher core counts at lower cost, allowing higher levels of processing power and improved energy efficiency. You can also read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ARM_architecture

The role of Informix:

Informix 12.10 is an industrial strength, relational SQL99-based database with features that is ideal for deep embedded applications. Here is a list of features that make Informix an ideal choice:

  • 1x 10/100 ethernet, support usb wifi
  • For more details please visit : http://docs.cubieboard.org/products/start

What benefits will the consumer of this device get?

Super value for money, along with Informix Database which has industry’s widest sets of options for keeping data available at all times including:

  • zero downtime for maintenance
  • continuous local collection and processing of critical vehicle monitoring parameters (e.g. engine parameters, environmental parameters)
  • Informix 12.10 time series data capabilities
  • continuous local recording of positional data (e.g. the current vehicle position)
  • Informix 12.10 geospatial data capabilities
  • on-board data analytics on the collected time series based data and generation of alerts, either constant replication of those kind of data to a central instance (if a network connection is available) or local storage until a network is in reach

What is the future plan with this device (Upgrade, market etc)?

With the latest release of Informix 12.10.UC2 to our OEM partners, we hope to find many new partners who are looking for a new platform where all the attributes above are important. And for any further information on this topic please do not hesitate to contact us!

Upping the Informix Ante: Advanced Data Tools

PS: Kindly note that this is a republished blogpost from Mastering Data Management

Upping the Informix Ante: Advanced Data Tools

A few weeks ago, when we spoke to IBM Champion for Informix Lester Knutsen, we realized that his company – Advanced Data Tools – is home to three Champions with a combined 82 years of Informix experience.

Cindy Lichtenauer has been working with Informix since she was at Southwestern Bell in 1988, and she also worked for Informix for 12 years. Art Kagel began his career as a developer and “found” Informix in 1983 when he was challenged to discover a new developmental environment and database. And Lester is a founding member of IIUG and one of our inaugural IBM Champions. Be sure to check out our full interview with Lester.

All three are very active in the International Informix Users Group (IIUG) – in fact, that’s how they met. So we talked to the trio about the value of user groups and the upcoming IIUG conference.

Lester’s user group experience dates to 1983. That’s when he attended his first user group meeting and came away with a “badly Xeroxed” copy of a program that became PC-Talk. But the people he met that night helped him overcome the bad handout and learn RS-232 communications, which inspired him to become a regular participant in user groups.

Each cites different reasons for investing time in IIUG. For Cindy, it’s about “making life-long connections and friends, and sharing knowledge and learning.” She found her last two jobs through IIUG contacts, and is active on the IIUG Conference planning committee.

Art sees access to IBM Informix executives and developers as a key reason to remain involved, as the group affects the direction of the product. “As individuals,” he explained, “we only have so much influence. As a group, we have power.” Through IIUG, Art says, users can help keep IBM focused on their needs while giving feedback on how well the software meets those needs. He also sees it as a way to “pay back” everything he gets from the community. “I type fast,” he joked when Lester noted how much time Art spends on the forums.

For Lester, IIUG’s value is in finding questions that he may not have considered otherwise. Sharing best practices and getting answers keeps him coming back for more. “You show up and participate… and you’ll find people faced with the same technical challenges you faced, who have solved them in interesting ways that you can learn from,” he explained.

All this learning comes together each April at the annual IIUG conference. As Stuart Litel told us recently, and Cindy confirmed, the conference has grown for 2012. Two new tracks will focus on development and how other IBM products work with Informix. In addition to the 80 planned sessions, full day tutorials and hands-on labs will give attendees plenty of knowledge and tools to take back to their work. This year’s registration is ahead of last year’s, with lots of new people planning to attend.

The team ups the ante on applying all that knowledge with their annual Fastest Informix DBA contest. Each year, about 30 attendees compete for bragging rights (and an iPad) to solve a real-world Informix problem. The contest has created quite the rivalry, and the time constraints – an hour to complete the challenge – keep it intense. Last year’s challenge sought who could get the most transactions in ten minutes on a 1000 user OLTP benchmark, using a very small machine.

Head to the IIUG Conference (April 22-25 in San Diego) to meet Art, Cindy and Lester and see if you have what it takes to be the Fastest Informix DBA. And listen to the podcast for more of our interview.

Inspiring “Aha” Data Moments: Lester Knutsen

PS: This is a republished blogpost from Mastering Data Management

One of our inaugural IBM Champions, Lester Knutsen, summed up his Informix work in a single sentence: “I like building databases.” While working at Aberdeen Proving Ground in 1983, one of the first Unix boxes arrived, bundled with Informix – and Lester marveled at how quickly he could get into it.

This passion drives everything he does. Lester is president of Advanced DataTools, an Advanced IBM Partner that focuses on Informix consulting, training, support and software. Lester is also a founding member of IIUG (the International Informix Users Group), president of the Washington, DC area Informix Users Group and an IBM Gold Consultant.

Lester and his Advanced DataTools team engage users in every step of the data warehouse process. Lester explains, “End users don’t really know what they want until they see it. Anybody who thinks you can just design a project on paper and then go implement it, unchanged, is dead wrong. You’ve got to have user involvement – and that’s the key part of agile development.”

Starting with user requirements, the team loads the data and builds a prototype that lets clients “kick the tires” and see how their data actually works within the warehouse. Clients are often surprised at what they find in the prototype. For the first time, they can identify their biggest customers or find missing transactions.

Even more important, though, is the ability to change direction as clients have “aha” moments about their data. Sometimes, seeing the prototype in action inspires an even better idea.

Besides building databases, Lester and his team spend a lot of time helping clients navigate an ever-changing regulatory environment. While regulations are important, Lester has noticed that some very large organizations use them as “an excuse not to get things done.” These organizations often lack a truly cooperative team or a clear mission.

In contrast, Lester is proud of his team, noting he’s built, “the best pool of Informix talent in the world, outside of IBM.” The team includes two additional IBM Champions, Cindy Lichtenauer and Art Kagel, with whom we did a follow-up interview. (Stay tuned.) Lester firmly believes that, “Good people attract good people,” and he’s committed to developing talent. Advanced DataTools has a unique internship program for high school seniors and college students who show promise in technology. Several participants have come to work for Advanced DataTools after graduation.

Through it all, Lester tries to foster an environment that’s “fun, interesting and challenging.” His team works hard, but they also list their passions on the company’s website. In Lester’s case, he travels extensively to scuba dive and take underwater photos and videos. You can view his incredible collection at http://www.lesterknutsen.com. Currently, he’s using his database skills to organize his growing video library before heading to Indonesia this summer.

Listen to our interview for more from Lester, and be sure to watch this space for our follow-up conversation with the trio of Champions from Advanced DataTools. You can also follow Lester on Twitter @LesterKnutsen.

The Secret of Informix: Stuart Litel

PS : This is republished blopost from Mastering Data Management

During our recent interview with International Informix User Group (IIUG) president Stuart Litel, he shared the best-kept secret about Informix. Working with Informix since the mid-1980s, Stuart is well-qualified to share such secrets. But we’ll get to that in a bit.

Stuart first encountered Informix when he was hired by Sheraton to replace the worldwide Sheraton reservation service. During testing, the team discovered that “this thing called Informix” worked best. Overnight, Sheraton became the world’s largest non-governmental user of Informix.

IBM’s 2001 acquisition of Informix changed the game, adding resources that have made Informix even more stable and useful. Stuart points to the prevalence of releases offering new features as a huge reason that users choose – and stick with – Informix.

“We buy technical products for technical reasons, or to solve a technical problem,” he explained, noting that he’s never met a person who left Informix for technical reasons – which says a lot. Informix is “too stable for its own good,” Stuart said, joking that the biggest job of an Informix DBA is to search the internet. “When a person gets a hold of [Informix] and has used it for awhile, they really dread using another database product.”

As president of IIUG, Stuart spoke highly of the users, saying, “The people who use it are a testament to the product.” He’s currently very busy preparing for the April IIUG Conference, which will be the biggest ever, and the first time the conference will be in San Diego. Stuart praised the host hotel’s wifi – it even works by the pool – and food.

But more importantly, the larger hotel will allow for more sessions. Organizers have added two educational tracks, bringing the total to seven tracks with over 80 sessions. Stuart is especially enthusiastic about David Barnes’ keynote on Big Data. David is Program Director, Strategy and Emerging Technologies with IBM.

Join Stuart and IIUG April 22-25 in San Diego for the IIUG Conference. While you’re there, get certified and attend the hands-on labs.

Oh, and what was Stuart’s best-kept secret about Informix? “It works.”

IBM Informix Business Partner Montage

IBM Informix Business Partner Montage : A new video was developed recently, where we tried to find out why our business partners rely on IBM Informix, for their business. The outcome of the video was really promising, as our Business Partners summarized the benefits of IBM Informix, just in the way we are all familiar with it:

  • “Low cost of owner ship”
  • “Extremely reliable”
  • “Flexible”
  • “Scalable”
  • “Reliable”
  • “It just keeps running, without the need of any maintenance”
  • “Set it and forget about it”
  • “High availability”
  • “It is designed to work, and it works just the way it is designed to do”

And at the end of the video, it is great to hear from our business partner, perhaps a very unique and distinguishing fact, that only an Informix user would have the luxury of saying, “I am not just an Informix user, I am an Informix fan!”

A special thanks to all our Business Partners who were a part of this video, for making it a very special and successful one for Informix.
