IBM Informix growth strategies – 3 Point growth plan

I had the opportunity to interview Bernie Spang  (Director, Strategy and Marketing, Database Software & System, IBM Software) during the Informix India annual user group meet  (Feb 2012).

I started by asking him more details about, the title of his session he conducted during the conference, on “Informix growth strategies”.

He summarized his response in a crisply laid out, 3 point growth plan strategy for Informix.

The 1st point in the growth plan strategy focused on: Enhancing the value of Informix environment to the existing clients of Informix. Here he touched upon the new capabilities that were added to Informix, with each new version, which enhanced performance of Informix. Be it with the addition of Informix warehouse accelerator, improving analytical queries up to a 100 times faster or adding the new Genero capabilities – for extending Informix applications to the web, mobile devices and cloud. All these new additions reinforce and enhance the Informix experience to the existing clients and make them continue to upgrade and expand their use of Informix environment.

The 2nd point in the growth plan strategy focused on: Continuing to leverage the Informix advantage. Here, he touched upon the legendary ease of management feature of Informix – the “set it and forget it” aspect, and how it becomes a perfect choice, especially for solution partners for embedding within solutions. He briefly spoke about how IBM is focused on growing the number of solution partners that are adapting and incorporating the Informix software, and cited the example of adding 75 new partners in this category just last year alone.

The 3rd point in the growth plan strategy focused on: Leveraging the industry unique capabilities of Informix. Here, he spoke about the inherent capability of Informix software to manage relational data, time series data and spatial data, all within the same software system of Informix, but doing it in a way that’s not putting time series data and spatial data in a relational structure, thus delivering greater performance coupled with more efficient use of storage. He then spoke about the most interesting aspect of this Interview, where he correlates how the world was becoming, increasingly instrumented, as it got smarter. And with the emerging industries ever increasing focus on Smart meters (for energy and utilities), smart sensors (in traffic flow systems), smarter building solutions etc, he explains how there is a great opportunity for Informix due to its ability to leverage the industry unique capabilities.

The interview ended on a very positive note, where Bernie reinforced IBM’s vision with Informix, and clearly laying out the plan to make the vision a reality.

IBM Informix goes to the University; Learned by over 4K students and still counting

Meet Dr. Mirta Baranovic, Head of Applied Computing Department, School of Electrical Engineering and Computing at the University of Zagreb in Croatia.

What is the connection between Dr. Mirta Baranovic and Informix?

Dr. Mirta Baranovic started developing a passion for Informix in the early eighties, bringing Informix to the University of Zagreb and using it as the basis of her database courses. In fact, more than 4,000 database students have taken her classes over the years.

When asked “why Informix?” her reply is simple – “love at first sight”. She gives a lot of credit to the architecture of Informix which is in her words ‘brilliant and modern’. From an academic’s point of view, there is another compelling reason for liking Informix, the fact that the concepts in Informix are clear and simple, and a student can easily grab those concepts. And thanks to the way Informix is built, it requires little or no effort to run.

In addition to these reasons, a key strategic relationship with an Informix business partner in the region further strengthened this relationship. It is a fact that, although students had the option of using the other products, Informix has been and continues to be a popular choice.

It’s indeed a pleasure to know how Informix is playing an important role in shaping up the career of thousands of students across Croatia.

The unmatchable features of Informix that came up in my conversation with Dr. Mirta Baranovic, include:

  • Reliability
  • Quality of architecture
  • Clarity of concepts

All these qualities add up to make Informix a preferable choice for Dr. Mirta Baranovic.

This is a rare testimony for Informix, where Informix is making a difference in teaching many generations of students, the fundamental database concepts. I am not sure how many other products can make such claims.

I sincerely thank Dr. Mirta Baranovic for giving me the opportunity to learn about her work, and Stuart Litel for introducing me to Dr. Mirta.
